Sound Off! -- On Your Local Library

Library2

Your Township Board would like your input regarding our community library. By way of background, the current library

is a 15,000 square foot building constructed in 1989 when the Township population was approximately 32,500.

Georgetown’s population has now risen to roughly 51,000 residents making it the 9th largest Township in the State.

Our library has not kept pace with our rapid growth. It is inadequate, undersized, inaccessible, inconvenient, and, quite

frankly, somewhat uninviting. A recent professional needs assessment and space analysis study concluded that our

library is one-third the size of comparable libraries in similarly sized cities and townships. It is also behind the curve in

transitioning to the changing needs and uses of 21st century libraries. To be clear, we don’t believe this requires a site

change – the library should remain in its central location. But it cannot maintain its current size and layout. Our

community deserves better.

These concerns have been the subject of considerable discussion and study by the Board, library staff, and community

focus groups for several years now. We believe the time has finally come to put action to words. In doing so, we need

even wider input from our residents than we have received so far. To that end, as noted, we have convened resident

focus groups. Soon the Board will be holding a town hall meeting singularly focused on your ideas for the kind of library

improvements you would like to see. Additionally, for your convenience, we are soliciting your input via email. Simply

send your ideas, thoughts, and suggestions to contact@georgetown-mi.gov. All input will be made available to the

Board who takes your suggestions to heart. We want this to be a project that enriches your family and enhances our

community. A library you can be proud of. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Jim Wierenga

Township Supervisor
